Over 90% of Deaf people are born to hearing parents, and in more than 85% of those cases, the parents never learn sign language. Without it, Deaf children are cut off from early communication, family conversations, and access to God’s Word in their heart language.

This year, our Year-End Campaign is focused on helping DOOR complete the Kenyan Sign Language Bible Translation, bringing God’s Word to the Deaf community in Kenya and beyond. Every gift directly supports this effort.

The following story comes from one of DOOR’s local leaders and shows exactly why this work matters
so deeply.

A Word That Speaks to the Heart: Lewis’s Story

Simon Mwita, a member of DOOR’s Kenyan 2-by-2 team, recently shared an inspiring testimony of transformation.

Lewis was born Deaf. He cannot read, and for most of his life, he’s been quiet and reserved. But something beautiful happens when Lewis is around other Deaf people or anyone who communicates in Kenyan Sign Language. His joy becomes visible. His eyes light up. His quiet demeanor gives way to a vibrant presence.

Simon met Lewis for the first time toward the end of last year. What happened next left a lasting impression. “I was amazed,” Simon recalls. “As soon as Lewis saw God’s Word in Kenyan Sign Language, his entire face lit up. A wide grin spread across his face, and this quiet man suddenly came alive.”

That moment marked a turning point. Lewis couldn’t keep the joy to himself. He began inviting other Deaf friends to his home to watch Scripture stories in Kenyan Sign Language. He wanted them to experience what he had through seeing God’s Word, finally accessible, finally personal.

Today, Lewis is one of the most active Deaf evangelists in the area. He’s not only learning the stories, but practicing and retelling them with passion and accuracy. He’s becoming a leader in sharing the Gospel in a way that connects deeply with his community. “I am so happy to see God’s Word in sign language,” Lewis says. “I feel as if God is personally communicating to me through these narratives. I am always practicing the stories and sharing them with other Deaf people here in the Kaplong area.”

Simon reflects, “It’s people like Lewis who fuel my desire to reach every Deaf person with God’s Word in Kenyan Sign Language. There’s nothing like watching someone encounter Jesus in a language that speaks directly to their heart.”

Lewis’s story is a glimpse of what happens when God’s Word becomes accessible to those who have never had it in their own language. Through the ongoing work of DOOR International, more Deaf believers are finding hope, community, and purpose in Christ.
